Take Charge of My Heart

Spoiler Warning ⚠️
First Impressions ⚡💋
Take Charge of My Heart gets off to a fantastic start. The premise is fun, different, and the fantasy element makes all the difference. After all, we're talking about a female lead who generates electricity and a man who needs that very energy to survive. It's a completely unlikely combination, but one that opens the door to hilarious situations, unexpected encounters, and a rather unusual romance.
A High-Voltage Romance ❤️⚡
The romance between Na Bo-bae and Baek Ho-rang was undoubtedly one of my favorite parts of the series. They have very different personalities, and that contrast is exactly what makes their relationship so entertaining to watch.
The chemistry between Chae Soo-bin and Kim Young-kwang contributes greatly to that. Their teasing, meaningful glances, and awkward situations feel so natural that they make the couple even more captivating. I especially loved how the romance managed to combine sweet moments with the exaggerated comedy that fits the show's premise so perfectly.
And I can't leave out Kim Young-kwang, who also played an executive in The Secret Life of My Secretary. It seems like this type of character suits him perfectly! Once again, he delivered charisma, humor, and romantic moments with such ease. I have to admit, when it comes to playing a businessman falling in love, this actor never disappoints me!
Ji Eun-ho: A Love That Didn't Need to Be Reciprocated 💞🥹
I have to admit, it's been a while since a love triangle left me this torn! Even though I absolutely loved the chemistry between Bo-bae and Ho-rang, I couldn't help rooting a little for Ji Eun-ho, played by Cha Woo-min.
Eun-ho won me over with the caring and respectful way he treated Bo-bae. He already knew about her condition, understood that she generated electric shocks, and was aware that a relationship with her would come with limitations. Even so, he was willing to stay by her side.
And this is where an interesting difference between the two love interests comes into play. While Ho-rang can touch Bo-bae without suffering the effects of her powers, Eun-ho doesn't have that advantage. He understands the risks and knows he might not be able to hug or kiss her the way he would like, but that doesn't make his feelings any less genuine.
In fact, throughout the story, I kept wondering: if Ho-rang weren't immune to her electric shocks, would he have approached Bo-bae and accepted her condition the same way Eun-ho did? That doesn't mean Ho-rang's feelings aren't real, but this difference makes the love triangle even more interesting.
However, what truly won me over was how Eun-ho handled rejection. Despite being in love, he respected Bo-bae's choice and never tried to interfere with her relationship with Ho-rang. He continued to admire her and wish for her happiness, even if that happiness wasn't going to be with him.
And I absolutely loved that the writers didn't turn him into a villain simply because he wasn't the one she chose. Eun-ho didn't have to become annoying, vindictive, or lose his good qualities just so the main couple could have their happy ending.
And let's be real, wouldn't he and Bo-bae have made an adorable couple too? I could genuinely imagine them together, building a relationship out of that beautiful friendship.
A Story That Started Strong but Lost Its Spark Along the Way 📉⚡
Although I really enjoyed the premise and the romance, I felt that Take Charge of My Heart lost some of its strength as the episodes progressed. And it wasn't because of the number of episodes, because I love short series! The problem was how rushed and, at times, unimaginative the resolutions to certain conflicts felt.
One example is Choi Do-yoon, Ho-rang's cousin, whose obsession with power leads him to kidnap Bo-bae and tamper with his own cousin's drink, putting Ho-rang's life at risk. After committing such terrible acts, his storyline ends with an emotional breakdown, a car accident, and an arrest that happens rather abruptly. I was expecting a more elaborate conclusion, especially considering the seriousness of his crimes.
And Han Seol-hee managed to make me even angrier! She actually confesses to Bo-bae that she arranged for her brother to be hit by a car, in addition to manipulating a video, spreading false information, and damaging Bo-bae's career. And after all that? She practically gets away with everything! I expected more than just an argument or consequences for her love life. I wanted to see her held legally accountable for her actions, especially for crimes that serious.
Another wasted opportunity was Do-yoon discovering Bo-bae's electrical powers. We're talking about incredibly valuable information in the hands of someone who was willing to do absolutely anything to hurt Ho-rang. That discovery could have led to some really interesting situations and raised the tension even further, but the writers simply didn't make use of it.
And I believe part of the problem was the decision to spend so much time on the main couple's separation in the final episodes. Once again, we get that old cliché of someone ending a relationship to protect the person they love, without considering what the other person actually wants. While we watched them suffer and eventually reconcile, conflicts that deserved more attention received unsatisfying conclusions.
For me, Take Charge of My Heart didn't need more episodes. It needed to make better use of the time it had. The series introduced dangerous villains and situations with so much potential, but chose to focus on a predictable breakup when it could have delivered more creative and impactful endings.
A Woman Who Generates Electricity, and Nobody Seems That Impressed? 🤔⚡
I know Take Charge of My Heart is a fantasy, and we shouldn't expect flawless scientific explanations from a romantic comedy about a woman who starts generating electricity after being struck by lightning. And that doesn't bother me. Quite the opposite! That fantasy element is exactly what made the premise so interesting.
But there's a difference between accepting something impossible within a fictional story and realizing that the writers don't properly explore the consequences of that very situation.
Bo-bae doesn't just produce harmless little electric shocks. Her powers can hurt people and even interfere with the functioning of an artificial heart. It's something extraordinary and potentially dangerous. Yet throughout the story, several people discover or witness her condition, and some of their reactions seem far too casual considering how unusual it is.
What caught my attention the most was the doctor's reaction when he discovered her condition. Instead of showing any real interest in understanding how such a thing was possible, he simply recommended that Bo-bae stay close to Ho-rang.
And I couldn't help thinking: seriously, we have a woman who literally generates electricity through her body, potentially putting other people at risk, and nobody is more interested in figuring out how this works?
To me, this was another missed opportunity. Fantasy doesn't have to be realistic, but the world the series created could have reacted much more convincingly to something so extraordinary.
The Message of the Series 💛
One of the things I admire most about Bo-bae is her persistence. Even as she approached her 30th birthday, without achieving the success she wanted as a writer and while facing so many difficulties, she continued to believe in her dream. Life doesn't always happen according to our plans, but that doesn't mean we should give up.
Another aspect that touched me was the burden she had carried for so many years because of her powers. Since childhood, Bo-bae suffered for being different, was belittled at school, and had to avoid even hugging her own family members. Imagine needing comfort and not being able to receive something as simple as a hug. What might seem like an extraordinary gift to others became a source of suffering and loneliness for her.
And although nobody in our world can generate electric shocks, I believe many people live like Bo-bae, carrying fears, insecurities, and painful experiences that nobody else can see. Sometimes we distance ourselves from others or suffer in silence because of experiences that only we truly understand.
And perhaps this is one of the most beautiful reflections Take Charge of My Heart offers: we never really know the weight someone else is carrying. Bo-bae spent years suffering because of something she never chose, believing she would have to live with that condition for the rest of her life. But just when it seemed impossible for anything to change, she finally managed to free herself from that burden.
Her story reminds us that the difficulties we face today aren't necessarily the same ones we'll carry tomorrow. Sometimes, life can still surprise us when we've already lost hope that things could ever change.
Conclusion 🌟
Take Charge of My Heart is a lighthearted and entertaining series, perfect for anyone looking for a romantic comedy to unwind with, watch alongside their little K-drama fan, or simply binge-watch over a weekend. With a different premise, a good dose of fantasy, and a romance full of adorable moments, it's a great choice for anyone in the mood for something fun and easygoing.
My rating? 7/10. I enjoyed the romance, the humor, and the fantasy premise, but I felt the writing could have delivered so much more. It started at full voltage, but lost some of its spark along the way. ⚡❤️
